Interested in volunteering to be in a ritual? Please read the information below to see what’s involved. If you are able to commit to the time and effort necessary to be in a ritual, please talk to a council member at one of our events or send email to [email protected]
OLOTEAS rituals require a significant time commitment, and sometimes other resource commitments.
Each ritual has three rehearsals, and the ritual team is expected to attend all three. Rehearsals are usually held on the two Wednesday evenings prior to the monthly event date, and a final rehearsal on the event date prior to the site opening. Evening rehearsals are usually held at the ritual director’s home. Additional rehearsals may be required for particularly complex rituals.
Ritual team members are also expected to have all lines memorized (no cue cards), and work together to supply costumes and props as necessary.
Below are the official Ritual Standards used by OLOTEAS Council Members who lead the monthly rituals.

OLOTEAS Ritual Standards
Last Updated: January 7, 2015
- The ritual theme and summary should be presented at the Administrative meeting 2 months prior to the ritual. The script shall be written and delivered to all Council members via e-mail no later than the day prior to the Administrative meeting 1 month prior to performance. The author will also bring enough hardcopies to the Administrative meeting for each cast member. All Council members will read the script and provide feedback to the ritual director as soon as possible. Council members present at the Administrative meeting may give their feedback at that time; the agenda will include time for casting and feedback. Any major changes that need to happen to the script shall take place prior to, or not later than, the first scheduled rehearsal.
- If the script is not delivered on time, the assigned ritual director shall choose a ritual script from the OLOTEAS ritual archives at the Administrative meeting and direct that ritual. Assigned ritual directors may swap months ahead of the script deadline, as long as adequate time remains to create the script.
- Council members agree to ask for help with ritual construction as necessary and communicate their needs if they feel they may not complete the script on time without help. Council members further agree to listen to feedback about their rituals and decisions about how they are or are not cast in a particular ritual graciously.
- Each ritual shall be rehearsed two full times on two separate dates prior to the performance date. All ritualists are to have their lines memorized and props and costumes assembled by the 2nd rehearsal. The rehearsal schedule for each service shall include a reading rehearsal, a blocking rehearsal, and an energy rehearsal or discussion of how energy will flow during ritual. Ritualists will rehearse in the ritual space prior to the ritual on the performance date. One rehearsal may be dropped with the consensus of the cast and Pastor(s). If only one rehearsal is scheduled prior to the performance date, costumes, memorization and props should be complete and in order for that rehearsal.
- Ritual writers must be 1st degree initiates of their tradition OR be approved by Pastor(s). First-time ritual writers shall work with an experienced Council member mentor.
- Rituals scripts should include a group grounding and centering or similar setting procedure that will be done with participants prior to entering the ritual space. Ritual scripts must also include a safety plan for fire, special effects, or other potential hazards.
- The Pastorate of OLOTEAS may invite other celebrants to lead worship services on an occasional basis.
- Guest celebrants shall be expected to adhere to OLOTEAS ritual standards. Guest celebrants shall be informed of this expectation and of these standards in writing at the time of their invitation.
